Paid Family and Medical Leave Contribution Rate Increases for 2024 in Massachusetts

The 2024 contribution rate for Paid Family and Medical Leave in Massachusetts is increasing for employers participating in the public program, according to the state. For employers participating in a private program, most carriers have not yet released their 2024 rates.

Employers with 25 or more covered employees will be required to send 0.88% of eligible wages in 2024, which is up from 0.63% for 2023. Medical contributions represent 0.7% of the rate while family contributions make up the other 0.18%. Contribution amounts can be split between covered individuals’ payroll or wage withholdings and an employer contribution.

Employers with less than 25 covered employees will have to send an effective contribution rate of 0.46% of eligible wages in 2024, up from 0.318% in 2023. Medical contributions make up 0.28% of this rate, and family contributions cover the other 0.18%. The contribution rate is lower for smaller companies because these employers do not have to pay the employer share of the medical leave contribution.
