Balancing Working from Home and Caregiving Responsibilities

For many across the country, working from home is their new reality for the foreseeable future as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread rapidly. For some, this arrangement is business as usual. But for others, including parents and caregivers, they now face the difficult task of balancing their working from home and caregiving responsibilities.

Tips for Working From Home

Create and follow a routine

  • Set your alarm to start at your desk at the same time every day, and enjoy getting more sleep with a shorter commute.
  • Break for lunch, away from your computer.
  • Schedule exercise and outdoor time into your day, before work, during your lunch break, or after work.
  • Set regular hours for starting and ending your day.

Create a workspace

  • Choose a place where you’ll have minimal distractions.
  • Make sure you have a quiet spot for calls.
  • Make sure you have a comfortable chair and plenty of room for your computer and supplies.

Get dressed for work

  • You don’t have to put on a suit, but acting like you’re going to work will help get you in the mindset.
  • If you’ll be on video calls, make sure you’re dressed appropriately.

Make time for the virtual water cooler

  • Text, call, Skype, Google Hangout, Slack—make sure you stay in touch with your co-workers, not just for work, but to hear what they’re bingewatching and how they’re feeling.

If you’re sick, stay home

  • Don’t go into the office.
  • Put an out-of-office message in your email.
  • Give your body the time it needs to rest.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Get better.
